ALTERNATIVE PROPULSIONS: A MULTI-POWER APPROACH

Since building its first diesel truck engine in 1908, FPT Industrial has endeavored to increase the efficiency of its products. In the past 15 years, amid growing concerns over emissions and noise pollution, it has also invested in finding new ways to power them.

In 2011, the brand launched one of its breakthrough technologies, the patented HI-eSCR (high efficiency Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, which offers a unique solution to meeting stringent emission standards. FPT Industrial's task is to engineer efficiency by finding the right mix of technologies for different applications.

CLEAN DIESEL

Diesel powered vehicles offer the best in class advanced solutions in almost all segments:

CNH Industrial’s brands' commitment to sustainability and innovation is reflected in their long history in developing and commercializing natural gas powered vehicles.

Since pioneering natural gas technology some 20 years ago, FPT Industrial has produced more than 60,000 natural gas engines to date, running on both compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). With a 70% market share in Europe, FPT Industrial has the largest natural gas engine portfolio on the market.

There are more than 40,000 natural gas-powered vehicles from CNH Industrial’s truck and bus brands IVECO and IVECO BUS on the road today, making them the absolute European leaders in their segments.

Capital cities as diverse as Astana, Baku, Madrid and Paris have chosen natural gas-powered IVECO BUS fleets to transport their citizens. CNH Industrial and IVECO are also working with world governments, such as those of Israel and Japan, and with European countries to develop alternative fuel and natural gas-based technologies and infrastructures.

As a result today IVECO, IVECO BUS and Heuliez Bus are able to offer a full range of methane-powered commercial vehicles and buses which provide all the benefits of natural gas.

ELECTROMOBILITY IN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

CNH Industrial has a long tradition in the electric vehicle sector, with the first IVECO Daily Electric, in fact, dating back to 1986. Electrified vehicle technologies represent the next step in CNH Industrial’s decarbonization strategy, not as an alternative but rather as a means to further improve the performance, efficiency, and sustainability of internal combustion solutions.

The technology will feature different characteristics depending on vehicle missions.

A wide range of vehicles with innovative hybrid and full electric propulsion systems offer fuel consumption savings and emissions reductions for sustainable mobility.

NIKOLA TRE

The Nikola TRE is the first Battery Electric Vehicle for the European markets jointly developed by IVECO and FPT Industrial in partnership with Nikola Motor Company.

The vehicle is built on the IVECO S-WAY heavy-duty truck platform and it integrates Nikola’s advanced electric technology and infotainment system.

  • Its modular battery system will have a total capacity of up to 720 kWh, customizable for different customer missions
  • The electric driveline will deliver 480 kW of continuous power output with 1,800 Nm peak torque
  • The battery electric version will be introduced to the market in 2021
  • The fuel-cell electric version, built on the same platform, will be tested for an expected market launch in 2023

NATURAL GAS IN AGRICULTURE

THE NEW HOLLAND METHANE TRACTOR AND THE ENERGY INDEPENDENT FARM

New Holland Agriculture has been working with alternative fuels for the last 14 years. The brand is a leading proponent of sustainable agriculture, which led to the world’s first 100% methane-powered production tractor, the T6 Methane Power, that will be commercialized in 2021.

The T6 Methane Power tractor is the culmination of New Holland’s pioneering work on the use of alternative fuels, and is a significant step forward on the path to decarbonizing agriculture.

The world’s first production T6 Methane Power Tractor has received a lot of interest from biogas plant operators and suppliers, and also farmers with access to the gas network, thanks to the economic and practical advantages it offers. Municipalities are also expressing interest in adding the tractor to their fleet of natural gas vehicles to further reduce their emissions footprint.

The T6 Methane Power delivers the same performance of its Diesel equivalent and it features a max power of 180HP and max torque of 740Nm.

In 2021 the brand presented a new prototype, the TK Methane Power, a specialist vineyard crawler tractor powered by the FPT Industrial F28 Natural Gas engine. The unit will be used to harvest the first CO₂ emission free Barolo wine at the renowned Fontanafredda vineyard in Piedmont, Italy.

The brand is promoting a circular economy in agriculture and the T6 Methane Power tractor plays a key role in New Holland’s Energy Independent Farm Concept, closing the loop of a true circular economy, from fields to energy generation and back to fields – a complete CO₂-neutral cycle.

The Energy Independent Farm Concept

Farmers can generate biomethane from waste products and use this sustainable fuel to power their T6 Methane Power tractor, thus reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 95%*. Farmers can also achieve a reduction of NO₂ emissions by up to 90% and of particulate matter weight by 95%, additionally they can also lower drive-by noise by 50%.

Livestock and dairy farmers can take this virtuous cycle even further by producing biomethane from manure, which subtracts CO₂ from the environment, resulting in a carbon-negative footprint. Farmers can also use the by-products of biodigestion as natural fertilisers on their fields, closing the circular economy loop.

ELECTRIFICATION IN AGRICULTURE

THE STEYR KONZEPT

Together with FPT Industrial, STEYR undertook a project study to develop the STEYR Konzept, a new concept tractor which combines innovative technologies, sustainability and efficiency to create the tractor of the future.

This innovative vehicle revolves around a modular hybrid electric drive with a high-efficiency diesel engine, a generator, and five electric motors, which are part of the future vision for agricultural machinery.

The STEYR Konzept offers a wide range of benefits:

  • Compact design and fewer moving parts to deliver optimal energy flow, reduced losses
  • All electric motors are connected so that power is always available where it is needed the most
  • An e-torque boost supplies additional energy at peak power, resulting in a highly efficient continuously variable electric drive 
  • Tractor hydraulics and PTO are electrically driven, with the latter allowing variable engine speeds as well as reversing
  • Thanks to its electric motors, there is an option to recover and store energy, which can be done when the machine is in descent for example.

The Konzept

ELECTRIFICATION IN CONSTRUCTION

In the Construction segment, key customer needs include lower annual operating costs and reduced maintenance and fuel costs. Customers seek performance improvements enabled by the high torque availability, as well as zero emissions and low noise for indoor operations.

The electrification in the construction equipment and the growing focus on sustainable power sources are driving forces for CASE Construction Equipment and for public and private fleet owners worldwide.

CASE 580 EV BACKHOE LOADER

In March 2020, CASE presented the 580 EV (Electric Vehicle), also known as “Project Zeus”, the industry’s first fully electric backhoe loader.

The CASE 580 EV matches its diesel counterparts on power and performance. It also has considerably lower daily operating costs while producing zero emissions – motivating factors for utility and government contractors incentivized to work with equipment that leverages alternative fuels and lowers emissions.

The backhoe loader is ideal for electrification with battery sized for typical 8-hour day (400 volts), and four-hour continuous heavy usage range.

Municipalities and city governments have already expressed their interest thanks to the benefits of this technology solution.
